Many Pastors every week enter their services feeling awkward when it comes to the time of receiving the church tithes, a special offering, or a great mission’s work. They stand before their congregation or a group and feel inadequate at that moment.
Do you feel inadequate when it comes to receiving the offerings at you church?
Pastors are taught and trained on hermeneutics (Biblical Interpretation); homiletics (the art of preaching); and given practical experience on service liturgy and ministry practices.
Early in ministry I too felt unprepared when I had the opportunity to receive an offering for our church. No one had ever invested into me the skill set needed to be able to serve our church’s vision and mission during the receiving an offering. And without that knowledge, no one has the confidence.
I heard one of my mentors make a comment during a message once. He said:
“When I was a young preacher, I was an in demand special speaker, because I knew how to raise the money needed for Gospel Ministry.” And then it was as if he looked straight at me, “Young preacher you better find out how to raise the money for the Gospel, for without it, you won’t be preaching long.”
I soon learned through trial and error and looking for mentors that there were 3 essential truths I needed to have in order to be effective and have excellence in stewardship.
That was a turning point and I made it my aim to pursue the same spirit of excellence in worship and receiving of offerings as I had been in the study and preaching of the Gospel.
There are so many organizations that claim that adding just online giving, text giving, a monthly giving letter, or a better database will automatically increase your church’s ministry income…. But it won’t any more than adding more offering plates in a service. Those are only implements that are utilized, and while they can help and I share how you get more potential from them, those tools can’t overcome the sense of inadequateness of the leader.
