Wednesday

Woke up at 4:30. Luke and I go to to Klawock to help prepare work on the carving shed.
Henry and Al are in the front of the truck and Luke and I are sitting in the back…
Tina and Molly are going hunting with Trish later this afternoon…
Jon Spellman is staying at the house to write… or so he says…
We get there around 7:30 and got to work. I began to make “shakes”. A shake is a red cedar shingle that will be used on the carving shed. The red cedar last approximately 80 years! That’s better than asphalt shingles, but there is the process of creating them. You use a “fro” which is a metal cutting edge along with a “ewe” hammer and work it down. (See the video – I’ll add it later) Lets just say its work!
Luke, Al, and Henry cut rafters so that another church next week can come and raise the rafters and the walls. According to Al (who is overseeing the building of the carving shed), the carving shed should be dried in within two days next week. The red cedar planks are from trees that are over 300 years old, and were cut with a saw mill that brought into the site, the wood cut, and then the mill was taken down. Evidently this is a common way to get lumber.
We left about 12:30 and lets just say is was a great day. By the way, it rained like a storm too!
We take pizza back to the house and come to find out Molly, Trish, and Tina have gone hunting since hunting season in Alaska started today and if you live in Alaska you live off the land! Let me say also that there are more deer standing and walking around here than I’ve ever seen. These deer aren’t afraid of people either they just stand and look at you. The deer in Georgia in my thoughts have always had a great stress because they seem desirous to die by suicide, by running into cars. There stress is so high that they always run and dart away if you look at them. The deer in Alaska have a strong self image and like to just look at you in a taunting manner!
