It has become a joke with many of my friends, of how much I text as I drive. I must say I have always enjoyed creating legends of my activities, even though the truth is boring to discover. I do drink a lot of coffee (two pots or more a day occasionally), but not as much as some believe. I also have been know to speed, but over all, I’m a slower driver than normal. It’s fun to let people believe what they want, at my expense.
While I don’t have the assumption that texting and driving are the greatest combinations of a safe driving component; I don’t understand the desire of the masses to give away activities to the safety police.
Personally, if texting is the unsafe scourge of society, it should be outlawed; but so should every other unsafe activity that people perform while driving. The following is my list of unsafe activities that I see people committing while driving:
- Adjusting the radio
- Dealing with children
- Applying makeup
- Fixing their hair
- Talking to other people in the car
- Typing on a computer while driving
- Talking to invisible people in the car
How would I suggest we deal with the above:
- No radio or audio devices in cars at all. NOTHING should make any noise that could possibly distract anyone. Deaf people drive in silence, and so should everyone else.
- Children under the age of 18 should not be allowed to be a passenger in a car. I have no plan for transporting children, but that isn’t the issue of this paper. Safety is!
- Since men typically do not wear makeup (unless you live in California), the only possible solution to this is outlawing women from driving.
- See above.
- Cars should only have room for the driver, no passengers allowed.
- No computer work in cars (Police Officers too), although with the weak work ethic we should be thankful someone is trying to work.
- Invisible people too should not be allowed in cars. We know that they have rights, and they are usually walked over, but hey… they are invisible.
Another tactic would be to outlaw all driving completely since statically, more people die in an auto accident than all those dying from the common flu (20,000), killed by murders (15,517), killed in airline crashes (120), killed by lightning strikes (90), and killed by anthrax (5).
Basically, everyone needs to be as safe as they possibly can while driving, but understand that no matter how much legislation politicians pass, it won’t take away every potential of error. Then again Numbers 3 & 4 above would possibly make driving safer. Without women on the road driving, accidents I’m convinced would dramatically drop… because men would keep their eyes on the road, and not looking around.
